I have a text formatted with a serif style, but now I want to have some of it formatted with italic style. But some of the text on both sides of the marked text will also be changed to italic

If you want only a single word different (style, language, caps, …) use a character style.

Hi there,

In normal text you should be able to just set a word to 'italic'.
If not you could try and create a 'Character style', set it to 'italic' and apply to the word(s) you want.
(Character style is under: Windows > Style > Character styles [SHFT-CMD-F11)

Hope this helps. Cheers, Ed'
