Question

Paragraph Style Indents based on direction to spine rather than left or right

Hi,

I have a question on paragraph styles.

As you can see on the pic below, i want to realize a layout with two different narrator layers which are sometimes interacting with another. so the first narrator is always on the outer margin of the book and the other on the inner margin, like nested.

So far I tried it with paragraph styles for each narrator with different text block indents on the left / right side and that works perfectly on every left page. but as you can see on the second pic I have to split and rearrange the text blocks manually on the right pages to have this nested effect. as i have many of those pages that is not an option for me.

Inside the paragraph styles options I found an option called „Alignment: Towards / Away from Spine“ which sounded like the perfect solution, but only works on left or right alignment not on justified alignment. So what I am looking for is a possibility to set the indents not on the left or right side but on the towards spine or away from spine side of my text block.

Do you have any Idea on this or maybe another solution?

Thanks for every tip on that!

Heike

Does the property of an object alignment to the spine or away from the spine work for you. It works with anchored frames. If not, I do not have an automatic solution.

It would be a little easier to position the textboxes, tight but I was hoping for another solution cause I would also have to assign it manually. Would be alot of work if the text is going to change afterwards again.

That's going to be difficult to do without manual intervention. Even a script solution would be tricky because it would likely involve lots of text reflow.

How wedded are you to having the narrators' start positions dependent on whether the text is on a right- or left-handed page? Maybe it's just me, but it seems that is asking the reader to work harder to determine the narrator based on the page rather than having a consistent start position for each narrator regardless of which side of the spread the text appears.
