Question

Paragraph style overrides when no text selected

While working in InD CS6, I noticed some paragraph styles in the palette appear with a "+"/override when selected, although no text or frame or anything on the page is selected. I thought it maybe meant that somewhere in the doc there are overrides for that particular style, but that does not seem to be the case as far as I can tell... thanks for any insight!

As far as I can tell, a '+' next to a Paragraph style when nothing is selected happens when there is also a Character style active (which is actually logical). Click on [None] in the Character style panel and see the '+' disappear.

    Hi John,

just tested this and cannot see that happen when a character style is selected in the Character Style panel.

Hm. After testing a bit I can see this happen in the following situation:

    1. Paragraph style selected in the Paragraph Style panel.

    2. Changed the active tool to the Type tool

    3. Changed the value of a type related property in the Control panel like point size.

    Regards,
    Uwe

    Thanks Uwe,

Yes, there are a number of possible sequences that might give rise to the '+' but it's safe to say that like your sequence, a:

Paragraph style selected in the Paragraph Style panel.

. . . along with some change in:

the value of a type related property

. . . puts it there; and there is some logic to that.

You're correct in that just actively selecting a Paragraph Style, and then a Character Style doesn't result in the '+'.

My pattern seeking led me to discover Paragraph styles that have been copied (and their copies) persistently display the '+' when they are selected with a click (and there is no text or text frame selected in the document).
