Paragraph styles, don't want it to affect text

So I'm starting to think this is not doable.  I have a document where I am going to need to place multiple, multiple page, word documents within my InDesign file.  I want to do it this way because the Word files have the text size, and more importantly, the weight, set up to the final specs.  Certain words will be bold or italic, and need to remain so.

I need to format it properly with paragraph spacing.  It's basically multiple outlines, so I'll be adjusting leading edge, left indent, and hyphenation, wanting the 1,2,3; a, b, c; i, ii, iii; etc to follow the same styles.  I'd love to be able to just select the paragraphs and select the appropriate style, but it changes my fonts also.  Is there a way to set a paragraph style to not affect the font size or weight?  The bolding, etc., are random words throughout the document, as they denote changes from a previous version.

    Use this script: https://indesignsecrets.com/perfectpreptext-a-smart-way-to-style-local-formatting.php

to apply character styles to all of your local formatting. This will allow you to keep your bolds and italics (as Character styles) while editing the paragraph styles.
