Hello Community,

I am trying to export a digital CV pdf, with a small introduction text and pictures of my work. So its one very long page, that should "nearly" have the width of the Computer screen. So its a "scrollable" pdf that kind of looks like a website. Bulding one long page in Indesign is not the problem. My problem is: As soon as I export the document and open the pdf, it shows me the whole pdf - like a looong thin stick, and I have to zoom in very much to have the correct width of the document on my computer... is there a way to fix that? As I export I can choose the "view" of the document, I chose there "fit width". But that didnt help...

Hope there is some solution, and sorry for the english, I am from Germany...

As always with PDFs, it depends on what viewer you are using, or what viewer your recipients will be using. If it is always Acrobat DC or Acrobat reader, a preliminary setting of "Fit Width" should behave as you expect and intend it to.

However, all other PDF readers, including the aftermarket ones such as Foxit, and especially those built into browsers, are rarely completely compliant with PDF display standards. Many ignore things like initial zoom and will open on the full page size regardless of how that initial setting is specified.

I assume that most of your recipients will be viewing the page in a browser, or in some kind of feature or plugin to an email tool. You are not going to be able to control this, and all you can do is ask them to open it in Acrobat Reader — which they may or may not do, and given how most HR and employee screening is done these days (at least in the US) it may simply get you bypassed.

Brilliant idea, but given context and purpose, it may not be a workable one.

Thank you all very much for your ideas and tipps, I think the explanation with the other programms not respecting the settings is the most reasonable one... I know that this kind of CV is not Ideal. For me a digital portfolio would be "perfect" if its just a website, like I said, if the application is digital. It is weird for me to send Din Formats as an application, that you open on the computer, thats where the Idea comes from to use a scrollable format like a website - because I just dont have one right now, and needed to send a CV very quickly. It is sad that its not working perfectly in every programm, but it makes perfect sense to me, i just expected too much, and thought that I made some dumb mistake exporting it...again Thank you for your time!

You can open the PDF with Acrobat Pro : File menu : Properties : Initial View

and set the magnification:

But, as said, browsers and low-end PDF readers may not respect this setting.

Check and see if you have the file set for actual size or fit to area. You will find that under print window. It should be marked actual size.

Seconding what @James Gifford—NitroPress said.

None of us can control what software program will open the PDF, and whether that program will respect how we've designed the PDF to open.

Given that, why not redesign your CV for a better user experience when it's opened? A long webpage-like format might not be the best design for your purpose.

As someone who does too many resumes, often striving for attention among the blue-linen executive look ones, I like the concept. Too bad there's no way to make it work more consistently.

I'd think about a link to an actual web page instead, although it would take some adaptation of the material.
