Pink 'missing font' highlighting on an installed font

I have an issue with a number of fonts which have, in the past, been perfectly fine. When selecting them from the font list, the text is then highlighted in pink and the font name appears in [brackets] as though the font is missing. I use NexusFont for font management and have never had an issue in the decade I've been using it, and it's just with a few fonts.

Using InDesign CC 17.0.1 (2022) on Windows 10. Thanks!

Hi jmlevy,

the crazy thing is that in Jon's case the glyph outlines rendered on screen are the correct ones.

Even if InDesign is showing the missing font pink.

Hi Uwe,

Yes, I have noticed that. And the font menu shows that it is the TT version of Optima which is used.

@Jon@HH&C do you use a font manager? Check if you have only one version which is activated. You could also try to restart you machine or to clean the font caches.

No, no font manager. I've uninstalled the fonts provided by the client and tried reinstalling, taking care to avoid duplicates, which were present. I think that might have been the issue.

Hi Jon,

my guess: you substituted an Optima OTF font with an Optima TTF font.

Please select one of the listed font styles and do "More Info" to see more details. Especially where the font is installed and what exact version is showing up.

I, too, am experiencing a similar issue. I replaced T1 fonts with their TT alternatives. v17.1 x64.

Can you post a screenshot (either of the control panel or the character panel) showing what font is used for the pink highlighted text?

Hi Annarti,

this could also be a font substitution issue of a certain kind. I'd try that without the font management application.

I also think, that we need some screenshots of the case. And the list of fonts in the Type > Find Fonts… panel where the applied font that is showing the issue is selected and Info is open.

Speculation:

Is perhaps a similar named font file stored in the Fonts folder of InDesign's application folder?

Or is there a Document fonts folder with a similar named font file in the folder of your open document?

Does it hapen will ALL fonts? Or only some? What fonts? can you post screenshots?

Maybe, you used a style of that font which is not included.

Maybe, you used not available glyphs.

Maybe, you used a character style which is niot available in combination on that font (look also into GREP, Inline, Nested and other styles which maybe applied in the paragraph style).

Like I said in the question, I know what the error highlighting means, I want to know why it's appearing on a font/typeface which is installed and active.

My exact process is as follows:

Create a new text box, with no styles active (ie [Basic Paragraph] for the paragraph style, [None] for the character style). So the default in this situation is good old Minion Pro: Regular size 12.

Type some text. Let's go asdf to be safe.

Select the text. Again, default everything, zero styling.

Select font dropdown list.

Pick desired font. In this case, featherly, though there are a couple of others giving the same error.

Text changes to the desired font, all the glyps accurately, but with the pink highlighting and [brackets] around both the font family and face in both dropdowns, as though the font doesn't exist.

That's the error I want fixed. If you can't drop the condescention in your reply, please don't reply at all, thanks.

Have you checked to see if there are any spaces that maybe a different font. example you may have used another font, then changed it?

If the font or font style has brackets around it, it means the font doesn’t exist. If no brackets, then the font exists, but the character doesn’t (in that font).

I know what it means, I'm saying it's giving these indications even though the font and its style does exist.
