Placed Illustrator Files Missing Layers or Displaying Incorrectly in InDesign 2026

Ever since I updated to Indesign 2026, anytime I place an illustrator file, there is a fairly high chance that one or more of the layers refuses to display or the file will be in a rolled back state. Its not just a visual glitch, when I export to PDF, the placed file will still not show what its supposed to.

It seems to happen more frequently when the illustrator file is larger, but I’ve also had it happen on tiny files. The ONLY fix I’ve found so far is to save the illustrator file as a PDF and import that.

    Hi @Colin.studio

Sorry to hear you're running into this, I understand how frustrating it can be when placed files don't display correctly.

Could you please confirm which version of Illustrator was used to create or last save the source file? If it was saved in a version earlier than 30.1 or 29.8.4, I'd suggest opening it in the latest Illustrator version (30.2.1 or any version after 30.1 or 29.8.4), saving it again, and then placing that updated file into InDesign to see if it helps.

Also, could you confirm the exact InDesign 2026 version you're using?

This was a known issue in earlier versions and has since been fixed by the product team. You can refer to this for context: https://adobe.ly/4sAKJXJ

If the issue still persists, please try disabling the "Save in Background" option in Illustrator Preferences (under File Handling), then save the file again and place it in InDesign to test.

Let me know how it goes.

For the record, this bug has not actually fixed by the product team as of Illustrator 30.3 and Indesign 21.3 on MacOS 26.4 this problem persists.

Thankfully turning off the “Save In Background” option in Illustrator does appear to fix the problem.  Glad this forum is here, this has been SUPER frustrating for the past couple of weeks.

    Hi @JoeWilson,

Sorry to hear that you're still experiencing this issue, I completely understand how frustrating it can be.

Just to confirm, could you please let me know if you re-saved the Illustrator file in Illustrator version 30.3 and then placed that newly saved file into InDesign, and are still seeing the issue?

If yes, we’d like to take a closer look at this. Could you please share the Illustrator file saved in 30.3, after packaging it via:
    File > Package

Additionally, it would be very helpful if you could include:

    • A screenshot of how the file appears correctly in Illustrator

    • A screenshot of how it appears incorrectly in InDesign

If the file is confidential, you can share it with me via DM using any publicly available file-sharing service.

Looking forward to your response so we can investigate this further.

Same issue here: individual elements or layers from placed Illustrator files suddenly stop appearing in InDesign. They are also missing in the exported PDF and even when previewing the file in Bridge. The “Use PDF Layer Visibility” option in the import dialog does not solve the problem.

A few workarounds exist: using “Save As” and re-importing the document, and/or performing an action (for example moving them slightly) on all the “missing” objects.

This has been happening very frequently since the 2026 versions, and it consistently causes a significant loss of time for what is clearly a bug.

Message to Adobe decision-makers: please, less AI and more attention to maintaining the core features!!

As @Abhishek Rao has already mentioned, try to disable Save in Background in Illustrator—will it make a difference?

I am using Illustrator 30.2.1, and Indesign 21.3 (though its been happening since updating to 21.0 when that was released).
Disabling “save in background” has fixed the problem for now, but will this be patched or will I be permanently without that setting?

I’m sure Adobe will fix it eventually; they've been aware of this problem for quite some time by now. Illustrator existed without this option for decades up until a few months ago and this setting was, evidently, introduced prematurely.
