Placed images showing up as white when exporting to PDF in InDesign

I ran into a problem yesterday with placed images in my document not showing up properly when I exported the file to PDF. It was only some of the pictures, not all of them. At first I thought that there was something wrong with the original image files, so I re-saved them and even went so far as to delete the placed images and place them again. I reset the preferences. Nothing worked.

Until now. I’m posting this in case anyone else runs into this problem. It turns out that the fill color of the rectangle behind the placed images had been accidentally set to spot color. Deleting that swatch and replacing it with a regular color swatch fixed everything. Hope this helps.

Yes, that was one of the first things I checked. The properties show that the frame has no fill. It was the use of spot color (which I do not normally use) on the object behind the graphic that was changing the appearance of the graphic when I was exporting the file to PDF.

@TheOriginalGC So, there could be two main issues.

    1. The location of the image that has been placed in the document could be either on the external network drive or external hard disk that is why either it could be saying missing or corrupt that is why it is showing blank/white. You can check it’s status from the Links panel by navigating to Window > Links. If it is showing fine over there, then try to embed the links by clicking right click and then click on Embed or you can package the file by clicking on File> Package.

    2. There are chances that the file might be showing as a missing link. In order to fix it, go to the Links panel, select the link and click on “Relink” option and then select the file that is showing missing and relink it. After relinking it, make sure either to embed the link or package the file.

Please do let me know if that works.

Here are some relevant self-help articles that you can go through.

Thx for that info. I had added a table to a text frame and placed the linked image in the table. This resulted in the image being displayed as a white box. I reconfigured the item so that there is a 1-row-1-column table at the top of the text frame, then placed the link graphic, then added a 1-row-1-column table below it with text. It now prints/displays properly. It seems there is a potential issue with images inside tables...maybe.

Even better, the Fill color of the rectangle graphics frame should be set to None.

I have checked that the frame fill is “none” but image still displays as a white block when printed to pdf. The image is definitely linked to an existing image. When I print just that page the image displays but when I print the entire document the image is a white box.
