Question

placing .ai docs in InDesign 2019 broken?

In 2018 and before, placing an Illustrator document in InDesign took just the image. Now doing the same thing places the whole page.

I have scripted processes that place logos (typically drawn on letter-sized pages). In the past this worked beautifully and the logos would fit into place at the correct size. In 2019 they end up with the whole of the Illustrator page bing that size and the logo a tiny speck. I have had to change to copying and pasting the logos as a work-round, but I'd dearly like to know if there is any way to get simple placing to work as it did in 2018.

Anything I've missed?

TIA

When you place Illustrator art are you doing so into a drawn and selected InDesign frame or are you clicking on the screen (after using the Place command)? If you are clicking on the screen then the expected behavior has always been that by default you will get the whole page. You can, however, choose how you want the Illustrator art to come in by first clicking on "Show Import Options" in the lower left of the Place dialog Window. Then you can choose one of the Crop options as shown in the picture below right.

I believe you an fix this by placing one illustrator file into InDesign with the Shift key held down to bring up the place options menu.

Change the Crop To option to Art. This is a sticky setting, so after you have done this once, your scripted process should use the revised setting.

What are your Import options set to?

(How to place, import, and insert images into InDesign: Acrobat (.pdf) and Illustrator (.ai) import options)
