Question

Placing Illustrator 2024 (2020 .ai) file I get a blank box

Hi,

I am working on an InDesign document with several linked Illustrator files. Everything was working fine until last Friday, now I am trying to place a linked Illustrator file I get an empty rectangle (with the right ratio of the AI image, though). In the preview, the file also looks empty.

The curious thing is that this file was linked correctly a week ago, then I deleted and placed it again and had this problem ever since. Also, I tried and it doesn't happen with other files.

Working on Windows 10, Illustrator 2024. All layers are visible when exporting and I tried different crop options in the Place menu.  I also tried saving the AI file again (keeping Create PDF Compatible File selected) and the problem persisted.

Thanks.

Is the file saved with PDF compatibility?

What happens if you save the AI file as PDF/X-4 and use that?

Hi Willi,

Yes, the file is saved with PDF compatibility. I don't just put together the InDesign, I also work on the content and I work on several .ai at the same time as in the InDesign. I can export the .ai, I've done it before because it's not the first time I've had this problem, but it really affects my workflow.

What do you see in the layers tab of the import options window?

Hi @Blanca M.,

I’m sorry you’re experiencing this issue with placing your Illustrator file in InDesign. It’s frustrating when things suddenly stop working.

To help us investigate further, please provide a few more details.
- Which version of InDesign are you using?

Could you also share the Illustrator file and the InDesign file which shows the issue in it? This will allow us to examine it more closely and determine what might be wrong.

We’ll do our best to help you resolve this quickly!

Thank you,
Abhishek Rao

Hi Abhishek,

I'm working on InDesign 2024. Unfortunately, this is a work file and I can't share it.

Thanks for understanding.

Hello @Blanca M.,

No worries, I understand it must be confidential. However, if it is possible would you like to drop a direct message to us? If yes, then please DM @Anshul_Saini with the file.

Thank you,
