PNG: Changing gamma value on Import does nothing?

I was elated to discover this option:

But it does not seem to do anything?
I understand what gamma does to an image.

1.0 should appear "washed out" and 3.0 should appear "dark".

But here, once I place the image, nothing?

No change in the appearance of the image.

Why? Why? Oh why, Mr. Adobe?

Windows 11 InDesign v19.0.

Save as PNG format from Photoshop with embedded ICC profile.

Nothing particular otherwise.
I tried one more PNG image to no avail.
