Preferences > Type > Type Options > Use Typographer's Quotes

This setting seems to be on a per-file basis now, not for all InDesign files. That's different than before InDesign 21.0.1 x64.

I can select it in one file, but when I open the next file, it's off again. Also, all my Typographer Quotes are now straight quotes, and to change them I have to open each file, turn on Typographer's Quotes, and search and replace. If I just search and replace, the files I haven't updated the preferences for keep the straight quotes.

Thank you!

The instructions don't match the ID 21 file locations, and it's a bit hard to follow. I couldn't figure it out. But I did notice one thing: it matters whether or not you have a file open when you set preferences.

I closed all my ID files, set Typographer's Quotes (TQs) on, and exited ID. Then I restarted ID, and TQs were on (still). Then I opened a document that I thought had TQs on (and was using them in the text, but was also using straight quotes (SQs)), and the TQs were off. So, I set the TQs on, saved, and exited. Then I reopened the file -- TQs still on.

I think my problem was that I was setting the preferences while I had a file open, instead of when all ID files were closed, but ID was running. I must have had a mix of TQs and SQs for months and just didn't notice. I don't know how that could have happened -- but since this doc has a lot of copied/pasted material, the quote styles may have differed. Arg!

Hello @jeanne_c,

I appreciate you bringing this to my attention. I checked the same feature on InDesign 21.0.1 running on Windows 11, and the Typographer's Quotes option remained activated for me across various documents, so it shouldn't revert to straight quotes automatically. Please attempt to manually reset your preferences by following the instructions in this guide: https://adobe.ly/4p4sLef. After resetting the preferences, restart InDesign, re-enable Typographer’s Quotes, and test it with a few new documents to check if the setting remains stable.

Let me know the outcome, and I'll gladly investigate further.

Abhishek
