Prenton RP Pro font is displaying in two groups

I have been using a font – Prenton RP Pro – for a numbers of years for a regular publication. I installed it from Adobe via Creative Cloud. It comes in 10 weights/versions.

Last week i started getting errors for missing fonts. Indesign has changed the name of the font from “Prenton RP Pro” to “Prenton RP Pro (OTF)” and has split it into two groups: one with Black and Black Italic weights, and one with the other 8 weights in it (Light, Regular, Italic etc).

I’ve tried uninstalling and reinstalling the font family, checked Font Book for conflicting installations (none), have tried restarting machine and Creative Cloud in various orders, all to no avail. My colleague has no problem with his font (showing as a group of 10 weights of Prenton RP Pro - without the (OTF)). The problem is that if he opens a file I have worked on, it shows font errors and vice versa. We can no longer work on the same documents, which is proving impossible.

I don’t know where to go from here. Advice appreciated

    Sooo.. This has happened before.

Prenton is being served on Adobe Fonts as two different formats. The Black and Black Italic are being served as Postscript-flavored OpenType, whereas the rest are TrueType-flavored OpenType. This is causing the separation you are seeing in the font menu as InDesign sees them as different (hence it flagging it with OT, which is silly).

I bet if you Remove Black and Black Italic from your CC App, the font resolves it self to the 8 TrueType ones and the OT disappears.

To be clear this is a problem with the versions of the fonts that Adobe Fonts is serving. They NORMALLY serve out just the Postscript-flavored ones, since Adobe prefers PS fonts outlines (whereas Google fonts usually served the TT ones), but there has been recent situations where the foundry has provided them with the wrong/mixed versions. (Helvetica Pro was a recent example, which has now been fixed)

So, what to do now. If neither of you is using the Black and Black Italic in the document, just remove them from your CC App and try again.

Just did a test, and sure enough, if you Install only the 8 styles EXCEPT Black and Black Italic, things are fine, but as soon as your add Black and Black Italic, it all goes sour.

    Hi Brad,

Sure enough, when I excluded Black and Black Italic versions all is well again. I do use Prenton RP Pro Black in a couple of places, so I’ll have to search out a close alternate for those instances until Adobe/the foundry sorts out the issue with Prenton.

Thanks for your help and advice, it saved me from many hours of hair-tearing frustration!

I guess it just means that if you want to use the Black/Black Italic, you can, but it’s going to mess with your menus and ability to select styles properly. [shrug]

Have you checked to see whether there is a “Document fonts” folder with the same fonts in it?

    Hi @CJC Williams

Are you absolutely sure that there is no font conflict? Usually, when (OTF) or (TT) is added after the name of the font, it means that 2 versions are installed.

    Am I absolutely sure… no.

I am pretty sure there is no “native” version on my Mac though, as I have checked in Font Book, and there is no font called Prenton in there. But I can’t work out where Adobe installs the fonts on my machine when they are activated, so I can’t be 100% sure they are gone when I “Remove Font” via creative cloud.

I tried to delete my font cache as well, but the instructions I found were quite old and didn’t work on my (Tahoe) machine.

OK, I found an XML file in

    /Users/[myname]/Library/Application Support/Adobe/CoreSync/plugins/livetype/.c

Which points to some installed fonts, checked in there and there are no references to any version of Prenton.
