preview of moving objects gone with the new 19.0 update + more

Hello everyone!

I'm really frustrated again... With the newest version of inDesign I faced the problem that whenever I want to drag and drop an object (text, paths, pictures,...) the preview of where I am about to drag it disappears.
I HAVE TO SEE where I drop it it. I don't rly like playing guessing games.

Unfortunately I saved the file while I had it open on the newest version. That was a HUGE mistake.
I can't even open the file on 18.5 anymore since the conversion of the file results in an error.

Fortunately I save the file on my external hard drive once a week. Not much was "lost".
I tried to open both files - the new one in the 19.0 version and the old file in the 18.5 version.
I just simply wanted to copy the pages I have been working on into the old file.
That doesn't work either; the things I copy from the new file to the old one will be pasted as an imagine(?)
The font was changed completely, everything was all over the place and I couldn't click inside the box to change the text.

Why are you guys (Adobe) always seem to break more things then fix them?
We customers all pay a shitton of money to use your programs. This isn't funny.

Sincerely,
Viktoria.

Hi Viktoria:

inDesign has always shipped with that feature set to delay. My best guess—and this is just a guess —is it defaults to delay because years ago on an slow computer it was faster to move an image by just watching the outline.

PageMaker preceded InDesign and had the same two move options. In both applications, we control whether we see the border or the image by the timing. If you press your mouse down and move the mouse simultaneously, you will see the outline of the image, if you press your mouse down and count to two, and then move the mouse, you can see the image.

Because I know about the timing technique, I've actually never changed the preference setting. I just pick the one I want in real time.

All that history aside, it's probably time for Adobe to change that default to immediate. In the meantime, you might want to make a note just to change it after each upgrade.

Just for the sake of clarity, that's not 100% true. There was one version (I don't remember which one) that shipped with the default set to never. It was an unmitigated disaster. The complaints about performance were through the roof. (edit: this confirms your suspicion of why it's set that way.)

I only point this out because with large documents it's going to present problems. Instead, I recommend the use of patient user mode. Click, hold for a moment, and then drag.

I have no memory of that issue, Bob—and certainly used InDesign that year. Do you remember the version? Was it rectified immediately in a patch? I tend to delay my updates until all the dust settles.

You can reset the drag behavior in Preferences, just like in earlier versions of InDesign. Set Live Screen Drawing to Immediate.

Not sure what is going on with the conversion error. I just opened an v19 file in 18, and it auto-converted as expected. What operating system are you using?

Omg! That helped, thank you! 🙂
I'm on Windows 10. I don't know what happened with the conversion either. It just stops at 33% everytime I tried to do it. So I just gave up. I can now work with the new version. Thank you so much! I'm just wondering why that feature was disabled in the beginning?

Unless I'm missing something, you just need to export your file to IDML from InDesign 2024, then open IDML file in InDesign 2023.

Do you have an idea how I could do that? Because using inDesign didn't work.

Sounds like the same issue reported by everyone that has upgraded to Sonoma.

Turn off your rulers or turn on GPU Performance. If you can, roll back from Sonoma to Ventura.

Hello! Turning off the rulers didn't do anything. The GPU Performance option isn't available for me. And I don't even know what Sonoma or Ventura means. 😞 Thanks for trying tho!
