Problem accessing XMP info box from InDesign links panel

Hi...

I'm trying to access the XMP File Info box from the InDesign Links panel to get info about a selected photo in layout. In the Links panel I go to Utilities and select XMP File Info... but the box doesn't appear. I think the box is active somewhere on my screen because after selecting XMP File Info... I can't do anything else because InDesign thinks I'm working in the XMP box and I get an "alert" sound when I try to select anything else. The only thing I can do is hit return, which normally would close the XMP box, and then my work space is accessible again.

In the past when I've accessed the XMP Info Box, it's always in the upper left corner of my screen and sometimes it's been pretty small and I've had to expand the box to access the information. But, I've always been able to find it.

I've tried changing screen resolutions on both the MacBook Pro and Cinema Display, in case it's hiding in some remote corner, but I still can't find the XMP box.

I did recently scrap all my preferences almost a month ago to try to fix a previous problem. This is the first time since then that I've needed to access the XMP info.

Any ideas what has happened to my XMP box or what I might try to do to get it back?

Thank you.

The XMP info box is still there. What you describe can happen to any dialogue box when there are problems with your monitor's settings, especially if you use an external monitor.

InDesign gets the information about your screen (resolution, etc.) from the operating system, so something isn't jiving between the two.

Exit out of InDesign before trying one of these suggestions:

  • If you have an external monitor plugged into your MBP, unplug it and let the system reset the screen on your MBP. Then re-plug in the external monitor.
  • Change the resolution of your main screen. IIRC, the "recommended" res for your model is 2880 x 1800 px so change it to that one if it isn't already selected. Or if it is selected, change it to something else lilke 2160 or 1920. Then shut down your computer (cold shut down, not a reboot), and restart it again. This procedure is to clear out any residutal settings that might be affecting how InDesign displays its dialogue boxes. Once you've done this, change the resolution back to what you had in the beginning.

Thank you for the suggestion, but unfortunately it hasn't helped. I tried twice.

I've tried just continuing to work with the external display disconnected, but I still can't see the XMP dialogue box.

I'm at a loss. I have workarounds, but the XMP info is a lot more helpful in my work flow on this particular project.

Hmmm, what Bevi suggests usually works. Have you tried rotating your monitor 90 degrees in your System Preferences to see if it shows up?
