Problem importing PDF into InDesign – “Trim box is missing or empty”

Dear Adobe-Community,

I am having repeated issues when trying to import PDF files into InDesign.
The error message I receive is: “Trim box is missing or empty.”

I have tried to edit the PDF and redefine the page frame in Acrobat, but this was not possible and the error message still appeared. As a workaround, I imported the file into Photoshop and exported it as a TIFF, which worked, but this is not a proper solution.

This problem has occurred several times already, especially with PDF files that I did not create myself. Could you please advise what is causing this and how I can resolve it properly?

It depends on what program was used to create the PDF. On a problem file, check the Document Propertoes to see what originally created it.

Not ALL PDF authoring programs create all the boxes that are used today, especially if it's an older program. Trim boxes are a more recent addition. You can view all the boxes in Acrobat if you change your Settings > Page Display and check "show art, trim and bleed boxes".

As mentioned already by others, change your InDesign Import Options to a different box, like ArtBox or BleedBox, for instance. even Crop or Media; you might just have to crop it down in InDesign a bit. This is far easier than going in and adding/redifining a Trim Box.

Hi Silke,

could you give us a sample PDF file?

I think, that editing the PDF in Acrobat Pro should be possible.

For example you could try to convert it to a PDF/X standard using Acrobat's preflight functions.

When you place the PDF, be sure to show options from the place dialog. The choices there are sticky and its possible you're trying to place a PDF that does not match up with the prior options.

What program has creted the PDF? File Info!

What standard? It should always be PDF/X-4

You say "It should always be PDF/X-4." Can you explain why?

X-4 has no transparency reduction. Transparency is alive. Flattened PDFs, like X-1a or X-3 have often stitching lines which are sometimes visible in the final product That must be avoided. Avoid EPS too.

I know that the TE gets the PDFs srom outside. Depending on his answer I would give an advice how to solve the problem properly.
Another solution could be to ask the deliverer for a different made PDF.

I have reasons for the questions I am asking as a qualified answer requires specific information.

Can you provide the following info:

OS: Windows or Mac and version

InDesign version

And can you upload one of the PDFs that is throwing the error message?

I do have one suggestion you can try:

When you import your PDF, check "Show Import Options"

In the "Crop to:" box, click on the down arrow to display the list of options and choose one. I typically use "Crop" or "Bleed", but just test to see what works for you.

Sorry, I just saw this after I posted the same thing. This is indeed the usual reason for errors placing PDFs.
