Question

Problem with the content collector tool and cross-references

Hello all,

I have a problem with the content collector tool and cross-references that are to be transferred to other documents with the tool.

Brief explanation: We use InDesign to create step-by-step instructions for our customers. Document A is a collection of many different instructions. Document B, C etc. are the individual instructions that are to take over the contents of document A, among other things.

In document A we use cross-references to refer to certain steps or pages of the manual. With the content collector tool, I have already been able to successfully link content from document A to B, C etc. in this way. Even in such a way that the page references have adapted to the new document.

Now the problem: When I change content in document A and then update the linked text frame in one of my other documents, InDesign also changes the cross-reference of the page in my main document A.

For Example:
- Cross-reference of main document A refers to page 164.
- If I transfer this content to my document B etc., the cross-reference refers to page 5, which is the correct page number for the separate document.
- If I now update the text frame because there has been a change in document A, the cross-reference in document B remains on page 5, but in my main document A the cross-reference also changes to page 5 instead of 164.

I thought the collector tool does not work bidirectionally. Are there any tips on how to change this behaviour?

Hello, for me I think it's in the options. I need to test to be honest but first, check the options like describe in this link. And when I'm back at my office I'll test options for a good answer.

Have a look at the custom style mapping and link options.

Let us know if it's help.

Hello Alexandre,

Thank you very much for your answer. I have now tried all the possible settings on the help page. However, without success.
The cross-references from document A still change to those from document B.

Your cross-reference is a Paragrpah or an anchor text ?
Do you work with Indesign books?
