If you are referring to auto-hyphenaton, it's on by default in Word.

Whether it is auto-hyphenated in Word or not, shouldn't affect your InDesign settings.

To see the settings in Word:

In InDesign--using paragraph styles, which I strongly recommend:

(Be sure to adjust your settings to your requirements.)

I read it  —but might be wrong — that typed hyphens are disappearing on import. This is a peculiar fault I haven't seen before this year, and in inporting the content for a large textbook, I find that it happens irregularly, mostly with hyphens in word pairs. A simple Search/Replace in Word, hyphen for hyphen, seems to fix it. I haven't dug into file level to see what's going on and why the hyphens vary or appear so irregularly, but this dumb fix has worked for me so far.

But yes, if the OP means auto-hyphenation, that's something you want to strip/remove from Word and allow InDesign to handle with its native capability.

This may sound stupid, but it's working on some files I am getting from a current author --

Do a search and replace of hyphens. It seems to replace nonstandard hyphens that don't import correctly.
