    Hi @Elsa+Bordes, thanks for confirming.

I tested the same behavior in InDesign 19.5.5 and found that the Eyedropper also sampled the placed CMYK AI artwork as RGB on my end.

Since you recall the Eyedropper correctly sampling CMYK colors from placed AI files in an older InDesign version, could you please install that older version alongside InDesign 2026 through the Creative Cloud desktop app and share a short screen recording showing the same workflow in both versions, preferably using the same AI file?

Please also confirm the exact older InDesign version where the Eyedropper returns the CMYK values correctly. A side-by-side comparison will give us a much better reference and help determine whether there has been a change in behavior between versions.

Thanks for helping us investigate this further.

Hi @Elsa+Bordes, just wanted to follow up and see whether you’re still experiencing this behavior. If so, please share the information requested by my colleague Abhishek.

Also, if you haven’t already, please update InDesign to version 21.5.1 and check whether the same behavior persists.

    Thanks,
    Nikunj

If the CMYK Illustrator .AI file was placed into InDesign, and the Illustrator CMYK .AI file already had swatches saved within it, then you would already have the Illustrator CMYK swatch in your InDesign swatch panel. Then you wouldn’t need the eyedropper.

    Bonjour Mike.

    Hi @Elsa Bordes,

Thanks for reaching out, and I'm sorry you're experiencing this issue.

Could you please confirm whether this behavior is new after the recent update(if possible, please check in Older version of InDesign as well)? InDesign has historically sampled the RGB preview when using the Eyedropper Tool on placed Illustrator (.ai) or PDF files, even if the source artwork is CMYK. You may find this related discussion helpful:

Also, does this happen only with .ai files, or do you see the same behavior with PSD, TIFF, or other formats as well?

If possible, please share a small sample .ai file and a short screen recording showing the issue. If the files are confidential, you can send them via Direct Message using Google Drive, Dropbox, or a similar cloud-sharing service.

This will help us determine whether this is expected behavior or a regression introduced in the latest update.

    Bonjour,

For me this is a novelty since the InDesign update

Hi @Elsa+Bordes , Sampling color from placed Illustrator and PDF container files has allays been a color managed conversion to document RGB—I have copies of InDesign back to CS6 and can confirm the behavior in all versions.

AI and PDF can contain a mix of color spaces and color profiles, while an image always has a single color space and profile. So if I sample a CMYK image, I get a CMYK color, sample Lab or RGB images, I get Lab or RGB colors.
