Probleme mit Palatino Linotype

Hallo Ihr,

LG, Birgit

    Hi Birgit,

From your initial post, I am still wondering about this question: Is your client using paragraph and character styles in the Word doc that are setup so as not to be based on Normal?

Is your InDesign document setup so as to have style names that are named the same as the style names in the Word doc?

When you “manually” fix things, are you doing so in the Find Font along with having the checkbox on for Redefine Paragraph Style?

No doubt after 27 years, you know that at least three things can override another and confuse the look of the text. If that is still mysterious to you (and it is to everyone), be sure to read this article:

I hope some of these general reminders help!

I’m pretty late to this conversation, but I’m curious about the underlines…

Are they “squiggly”? That would possibly indicate a problem with spellings, and I would trace that perhaps to the wrong language specified for the text in your paragraph or character styles.

    Hi Mike,

I’m no native speaker and am not sure if I understand your - useful - questions and comments.

I tried assigning Palatino Linotype in docx and doc-files, before placing them in InDesign, but with the same result.

I have to look where I can find other paragraph and character styles than those in the Word-menu (font, style, size etc.). It doesn’t seem that there are some.

But I had a glimpse at the trainingonsite you linked here and will read it carefully to find all possible obstacles - thanks a lot!

    Hi@BirgitBirgit ,

I understand how frustrating this must be, especially when it's affecting your workflow so heavily.

I tried to reproduce this on my end using InDesign 21.3, but the font and its styles were mapping correctly without showing the "[Nothing]" behavior. When I checked my setup, the only source of Palatino Linotype on my machine was from the system fonts folder, and there were no duplicate versions installed, including none from Adobe Fonts.

Based on this, it would be helpful if you could check for any duplicate installations of the font on your system and remove them. You can look into the following locations:

User fonts are typically stored at C:\Users<YourUsername>\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Fonts
System fonts for all users are at C:\Windows\Fonts
Adobe fonts can be found at C:\Users<YourUsername>\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Fonts

Ideally, keep the font only in the system fonts location at C:\Windows\Fonts and remove it from any other locations to avoid conflicts.

After that, please clear the font cache and test again. You can follow the steps here: https://helpx.adobe.com/fonts/kb/troubleshoot-fonts-illustrator-indesign.html

Let me know how it goes after trying this. Looking forward to your update.

    Yes, it is frustrating.

Following your suggestions I checked installation of the font. I found none of the folders you quoted, only the next higher level.

I can’t deinstall (to re-install) Palatino Linotype, found out that it’s a system font that can’t be deintalled.

The .indd file shows Palatino Linotype Open Type True Type. I searched for both and found only ttf.

After meanwhile days of (tried) troubleshooting for a very expensive software now I’m tired.

    Hi @BirgitBirgit

Thanks for giving those steps a try. I can understand how frustrating this is, especially when the issue persists despite your efforts.

To help investigate this further, could you please share a short screen recording demonstrating the complete workflow, especially how the Word file is being placed and how the formatting changes appear in InDesign?

Also, if possible, please share an affected sample file(Word and InDesign file) after packaging it using the steps here: https://helpx.adobe.com/indesign/using/preflighting-files-handoff.html#package_files

If the file is confidential, you can share it via DM using any publicly available cloud platform like Google Drive or Dropbox.

Looking forward to your update so I can take a closer look and assist further.

It would be awesome just to know how I can deinstall [Nothing] in Palatino Linotype, because the software implements it, but doesn’t know it.

Therefore I have to change it, but have to choose another font style - and this will skip all others I would like to maintain.

Does anybody know how to delete a font style, i.e. maintain Regular, Italics, Bold, Bold Italics, but skip [Nothing]?

I know you have reasons to use InDesign 2023, but still: do you have the same issue in the current version of InDesign 2026?

Yes, InDesign 2026 leads to the same lots of unwanted settings and effects. I tested it with several word-files and also set the doc to standard format.

And do you have the exact font that your client is using?
