    I followed pretty much all of the advice I was given, including replacing all the fonts, then saving the clean file as an IDML, reopening it, saving it as an INDDC, and only then creating a duplicate.

    So far, it seems to be working. I’ve worked on it for about three hours without any crashes.

    I’m still making regular copies of the file as a precaution, just in case one of them becomes corrupted again and I have to start over. I’m still not completely confident that the issue is fully resolved, though.

    Hi @olivliv

    Thanks for the update! I'm glad to hear the rebuilt file has been stable so far after replacing the fonts and rebuilding it through the IDML workflow.

    Hopefully that has resolved the issue, but if the crash returns, please let us know if you notice any specific trigger or if the font display issues appear again before the crash.

    Your observations will help us investigate further.

    Hi @olivliv

    Thanks for reaching out, and I'm sorry for the trouble you're experiencing.

    As the expert suggested, if possible, could you please share the template file that's exhibiting this behavior? It would help us investigate the issue further.

    Also, when InDesign crashes, do you see the Adobe Crash Reporter dialog? If so, please let us know. Ref: https://helpx.adobe.com/indesign/kb/submit-crash-reports.html.

    In the meantime, I see the experts have already suggested several isolation steps. I'd also like to rule out the possibility of a corrupted font causing the issue, especially since you mentioned seeing font display issues before the crash. Please go through the troubleshooting steps in this article: https://helpx.adobe.com/indesign/desktop/troubleshoot/launch-and-crash-issues/damaged-fonts-crash-errors.html. In particular, try clearing the font cache and, if possible, open the healthy template, replace the document fonts with standard fonts (such as Arial or any other), save it as a new template, and continue working to see if the crash still occurs.

    Looking forward to hearing back.

    Hi Abhishek,

    Thank you for your reply.

    Yes, I saved the report from the most recent crash. Would it be helpful if I shared it with you, or should I send it directly to Adobe? If so, what is the best way to do that?

    One thing I’ve also noticed is that after the latest crash, every time I launch InDesign, it immediately crashes again, even if I don’t open any document. After restarting, InDesign asks whether I want to recover the crashed file. If I choose No, InDesign opens normally and I can use it again. The repeated crash only seems to be triggered by the recovery attempt.

    I’ll also try the font troubleshooting steps you suggested, including replacing the document fonts with standard fonts.

    The difficult part is that I can’t immediately tell whether the issue is fixed. The file doesn’t crash right away. It usually works for several hours before suddenly crashing, and once it does, it becomes impossible to open again. So testing each change takes quite a long time.

    Ideally, I’d really like to understand the root cause of this issue so I can fix it before investing several more hours of work into the template and risking another unrecoverable crash.

    Thank you for your help.

    Bonjour @olivliv

    What are your InDesign and operating system versions?

    Also, try resetting your preferences and caches:

    Hi thank you !

    I’m using InDesign 21.4.1 on macOS Tahoe.

    I had already tried deleting the InDesign preferences and cache before, and it didn’t make any difference. I tried it again after reading your suggestion, but unfortunately the problem is still exactly the same.

    Bonjour,

    « Une erreur grave s’est produite. Adobe InDesign va s’arrêter. Redémarrez InDesign pour récupérer votre travail dans les documents InDesign non enregistrés. »

    Après le redémarrage, InDesign m’a proposé de récupérer le document. J’ai accepté, mais la récupération a immédiatement provoqué le même plantage.

    Depuis, il est impossible d’ouvrir ce fichier : chaque tentative d’ouverture fait instantanément planter InDesign avec le même message. La récupération automatique échoue systématiquement.

    J’ai essayé toutes les solutions classiques :

    • redémarrer InDesign ;
    • réinitialiser les préférences ;
    • désinstaller et réinstaller InDesign ;
    • supprimer les dossiers InDesign Recovery ;
    • dupliquer et renommer le fichier ;
    • ouvrir le document par glisser-déposer ;
    • ignorer la récupération automatique.

    Rien n’a fonctionné.

    J’ai même envoyé le document au support Adobe, qui n’a pas réussi à le récupérer.

    J’ai donc repris une ancienne version saine du template et j’ai entièrement refait plusieurs heures de travail.

    Ce nouveau fichier fonctionne bien. Par précaution, je l’ai enregistré sur le Creative Cloud.

    Aujourd’hui, pour un nouveau projet, j’ai simplement dupliqué cette nouvelle version du template. Après environ 30 minutes de travail, j’ai l’interface qui a bug et InDesign a de nouveau affiché le même message d’erreur avant de se fermer.

    Résultat : ce nouveau fichier est lui aussi devenu impossible à ouvrir. Chaque tentative d’ouverture fait immédiatement planter InDesign.

    J’ai même recommencé une seconde fois (en le dupliquant dans mes fichiers directement) à partir du template qui fonctionne, et exactement le même scénario s’est reproduit : environ 30 minutes de travail, problème d’affichage des polices, puis plantage définitif du document.

    Tous mes autres fichiers InDesign s’ouvrent normalement.

    Est-ce que quelqu’un a déjà rencontré ce type de comportement ? Est-ce qu’un élément du template (objet, style, police, lien, etc.) pourrait être corrompu tout en ne provoquant le plantage qu’après un certain temps de travail ? Pourquoi le fichier de base fonctionne ?

    Impossible pour moi de perdre le template de base, c’est des longues heures de travail.

    Merci d’avance pour votre aide.

    As a precaution, I saved it to Creative Cloud

    Hi @olivliv , Just to clarify you are saving the file as an .INDDC file and not an .INDD file right? Does the problem happen if you save as an .INDD file to your local network?

    How large is the file? Is it possible the file may have been damaged during the save (INDDC upload)?

    Hi,

    The problem actually first appeared with an .INDD file.

    After I lost that file, I went back to my original template (which was not “corrupted”) and saved it as an .INDDC file because I thought it might help prevent the issue. (I couldn’t save the corrupted file as an INDDC because it was already impossible to open)

    This new INDDC template seemed to work fine at first, so I assumed the problem was solved.

    However, when I duplicated that same template for a new project, the exact same issue happened again. I also tried duplicating it as an .INDD file, but both the .INDDC and .INDD versions eventually crashed in exactly the same way.

    So unfortunately, it doesn’t seem to be related to the file format itself.

    The file is about 70 MB, so it’s not particularly large.
