Question about how Book feature works

I am working in InDesign CC on a Mac. This is my first project using the Book feature. I've got 3 chapters in my panel, and the first one is set as the "Style" source. I just made some changes to the paragraph styles in that chapter, and saved the document. I thought they would automatically propogate to the other chapters, but that didn't happen. Is there something more I need to do to make it happen, or am I misunderstanding how Book works?

    You need to synchronize the styles. No way you’d want that to happen automatically.

    Open the book panel menu for that feature.
