Random sort of records

I have a set of records that I need to sort by a random number. I have tried to use the RANDOM command by defining it as an Integer but that doesn't work, it returns a zero for all records. I am not sure what that command actually does so that might be the problem but nonetheless I would like help on how to assign numbers randomly to a found set of records. Thanks.
