Read-only Indesign documents

Why are my Indesign documents automatically read-only? How do I make an already read-only document non-read-only? I'm having a problem with a file that I have to resave every time I've opened it. This is so annoying.

Have you turned off the Preview pane in Windows Explorer? That caused problems for me.

What OS version are you using? What version of InDesign?

Do you have your files stored on a network drive?

InDesign is EXTREMELY sensitive to the network's speed - so called "lag" - and if it "thinks" something is wrong - it goes into "panic mode" and opens file as read-only.

Try to copy your files - and all linked files - to your local drive, then relink all links to your local copy.

The same with fonts - if you don't have them permanently installed locally and somehow they are still linked to a network location in your system.
