Question

Remove Index Entries Under "Empty" levels

Hello,

I'm having issues working with an index handed over to me be a few other designers (ie. it has changed hands a few times) and I'm new to indexing as well. When I generate the index for this document it is pushing some entries to the next line and/or inserting leading between page numbers for entries. I think I've found out why this is happening but I don't know how to correct it.

There seem to be empty levels under which the actual page listing is sitting. How do I remove the empty levels without having to re-index the entries that this happened to, and how does this happen to begin with so I can avoid it in the future?

Please see link for images of what I'm talking about: Index Formatting Question - InDesign - Album on Imgur

Would appreciate any help, thanks!

Hi brittaniec,

Once you have created your index, you can delete topics that weren’t included in the index.

Choose Window > Type & Tables > Index to display the Index panel.

Choose Remove Unused Topics in the Index panel menu. All topics that do not have page numbers associated with them are deleted.

Please check out below mentioned links for further information on Indexes

Hello Srishti,

Thank you for your reply but that option is grayed out, assumedly because there are no unused "topics". We were able to find a partial solution in the time since I asked the question though. It turns out that by opening the page number for the entry and just resubmitting it (clicking ok) the page number shifts up in the order so that the entries display right when generated, however, it does still maintains an empty level in the index panel and only works if the PN is mentioned once not multiple times.
