Renaming indesign file

I have a completed design file packaged. I've received an order from my client to an upgrade from the original design.  I want to save the original to a new project ID but have never been able to make it work as the links remain tied to the original. Is there a way to make a completed INDD file to a new one with links tied to the new file?
