Retrieve missing files - post laptop wipe

Hi everyone!

I am new at InDesign, but read that files get automatically saved to the Cloud. Yet, I cannot find mine anymore.

I had dowloaded the app on my laptop and worked on them from there. I remember that, weirdly enough, I had two InDesign apps, one from 2023 and one from 2024, and only the 2023 one had my files.

Then I had my laptop wiped and assumed that, when I re-dowloaded InDesign, I'd have access to my files. Or that at least I'd find them in the Cloud. But the files seem lost now. Hence my request for help if there's any chance to retrieve them.

Thank you in advance,

Luisa

When you created InDesign files in the InDesign 2023 version, you saved them a location. It could have been on your local drive, or it could be on a server, or it could be on a cloud service like Dropbox or One Drive.

If you wipe the computer that was the storage location for those saved files, they would be lost.  On the other hand, files saved to a different server or cloud service would still be intact.

You've learned a painful lesson. You must backup your files in safe location (another server or a cloud service). There would be no way to restore the files if there was no backup.

Hi @Luisa347896507b1p , they do if you saved the files inside of your local ~Users⁩ ▸ username ▸ Creative Cloud Files folder, which by default is installed in your computer’s user folder. Any files you saved into that folder would have sync’d to your Adobe cloud account, and would sync back to your new computer’s Creative Cloud Files folder when you log into your Creative Cloud account on that computer.

Hi Rob, thank you very much for your reply.

I too figured that the files should be in my Creative Cloud, but for some reason I cannot find them. Could this be linked to the fact that last year I was using InDesign 2023 and not 2024?

I remember sometimes opening the 2024 version by mistake (which I already had last year) and not finding my work in it, because it was saved in the 2023 version.

If so, is there a way for me to dowload the old version and retrieve my files?

Version doesn't matter, but you do have to save the files inside of your installed Creative Cloud Files folder-- files saved anywhere else, for example in your Documents or Desktop folder, would not sync. You also have to have File Syncing turned on in your Creative Cloud app.
