Running Header not using last header on next page

I have a running header set to to display the first ( or last--I've tried both) instance of my title paragraph style that occurs on the page. This works fine with page 4 containing my introduction and page 5 containing a list of materials. However, my materials list runs on to page 6 and I would like for the running header to reflect that reality. Instead, the running header for page 6 displays my title from page 4. How to I get it to display the title from the previous page when no title is specified on the given page?

twice on page 4, once on page 5 and not at all on page 6

I did a sample file that worked as expected. While correct, the only odd thing was page 6: the first and last running header repeated the single one from page 5.

A running header variable will repeat the last used heading by default. Double-check you have the correct variable on the problem parent page. Try deleting the current variable and inserting the correct one.

I have varified that the correct variable is there. Is it possible that, since I am using a two page spread for the parent (a left and right parent), that it repeats the last used heading on the corresponding side? This might explain why page 6 is using the last used heading on page 4 instead of page 5 (since page 4 and 6 are both left hand pages). However, it seems strange that the page numbering would be right while the heading would be wrong.

Is the paragraph (or character) style the headers are looking for used multiple times on the same page?
