Running Header Text Variable Issue

Hello,

I'm looking for a solution to a problem with a Running Header (Character Style) text variable.

In a document, the linked style is applied to headings. On the same line, after each heading, is a number with no character style. I notice that, because of this, the variable is not working as expected. If I place the number before the heading, the variable is working.

Is there any way to get around this?

Good!

FWIW, It does relate to the frames on the page and if they are threaded, or not.

For some strange reason, things are working now. The Red Bold style is linked to the variable (below). Two days ago, ending the line with the number returned an empty variable, as if the style wasn't applied at all.

In this case, I can't use Running Header (Paragraph Style) because the number would be included.

A screen shot of the source paragraph and the resulting running head would be helpful here. I need to divide up long titles for the running heads and sometimes in two parts, so I have two character styles and call in two running header variables.

But of course, as per @Lukas Engqvist, if you can use Running Header (Paragraph Style), that is much simpler. I just can't because some of my authors write titles that are four-five lines long.

Is the number in the Running Header or in the Heading? Do you want the number in the running header?
You can have two text frames as your running header, or place the number in an anchored object (inline?) .

Curious as to why a Running Header Paragraph Style will not work, or is that because you only want part of the Heading in the Running Hearder?

May be I'm missunderstanding and it would help with a more specific example.
