Running InDesign from External Drive

I have all my working files for various CC applications on an external thunderbolt drive, including the InDesign files. Unfortunately, those don't work from an external drive and have to be copied onto the local drive for editing, and then returned to their external storage. It's a pain.

So I'm thinking about moving the content of the local drive - system, apps, everything - onto the external drive and start up the computer from there. Would that allow me to edit InDesign files without copying them onto the local drive? Or will I still have to do that because the system and applications actually work from the memory on the computer and not the external drive? Please advise.

Thanks

24 Terrabytes? Are you telling me you have a 24TB external?

Yes.

I think I found a solution. The external volume has four 6TB drives that are combined in a RAID 0 configuration. Since Apple's Disk Utility no longer allows to configure RAID setups I had to get SoftRaid to configure this external volume. Apparently InDesign - or OS X - sees this as a network volume and the protection to prevent multiple users to edit the same file simultaneously kicks in.

Fortunately SoftRaid allows volumes to be converted to Apple-RAID volumes. That's what I did and now the volume shows as a subfolder of the internal drive in the Finder (it still works like a volume when backing up with Super Duper). Now I can open, edit and save InDesign files from the external volume without copying them onto the internal drive first.

@judip7079 Your post makes no sense. If you have a question, please start a new discussion. I'm locking this as it has long since been answered.

Working from an external drive is not and has never been a good idea.

In short, you've given us very little in the way of info to offer you any advice. Without knowing more, the only general advice I can give you is to buy a bigger internal hard drive.

Where do I get a 24 TB drive for an iMac?

There is something wrong in the setup. Indesign does not distinguish between local, external or network files. Only in latter case, when a file is open and the network connection is lost, ID crashes.

Please explain why you think it isn't possible to work with files on external drives. They should be available in Finder like any other drive.
