Same endnote in multiple places

Hey!

The new endnote feature in Indesign CC 2018 is a feature I've been waiting for for years, but I can't figure out how to use link to the same endnote in multiple places.

I'm working on a medical brochure. Specific published studies has to be referenced to in multiple places.
But, when I try to add a endnote it automatically makes a new one, how do I reference to one that is already entered?

Example:
This text references the first endnote(1)This text references the second endnote(2)
This text is supposed to reference the first endnote once more(1)

Please, Adobe or anyone in here – why is this not possible? Or is it?

it is possible to point to the same place text/reference twice? I imported a Word doc full of double references and it works beautifully.

But I did stumble to figure out how to add additional Reference Numbers in InDesign pointing to an already existing endnote entry. Here's how. Rather than right-click (or control-click) > Insert Endnote, instead go to the pre-existing endnote reference number desired in your running copy—I wanted to reference 17 again, so I found an endnote 17—, then Copy/Paste that number in the desired location. You will then have to probably update the next endnote reference number back one digit (as it will have been updated). It's that easy!

While you can paste an existing endnote, it's no longer dynamically linked to an endnote like the others; it's just the number as text. Right? So in order to create a link you'd have to make a text anchor on the endnote and then link to that anchor from your pasted number. (Or link to the page on which the endnote resides.)

Out of curiosity i would like to ask... Since we are supporting both to and fro navigation for endnotes(unlike cross references), how would you want the navigation to work in case for endnotes when we have multiple endnote numbers in the text pointing to the same endnote text?

Because that is not what endnotes are for. To manage bibliographic references, you don't need endnotes, you need a reference manager. It works the same as in other document processing software such as Microsoft Word. They are just footnotes, except, well, they appear at the end.

You may not yet have encountered it, but another common way to refer in text to bibliographic references is [9-12,14] -- i.e., non-sequential. Again, the new Endnotes will not help you in any way.

But, to be fair. When presented by Adobe, that's exactly what they explained its usage for. The imagery they use is a typical reference list with reference pointers in the text.

And yes, I'm quite familiar with sequential referencing, but that was not the issue here the way I see it.

What is the use for this feature if it's not possible to point to the same place text/reference twice?

Is it meant to be so specific that it only works for, say a book, where the endnote over ex. 200 pages never ever points to the same explanatory text? That just doesn't make any sense in my opinion.

It does make sense if you consider them the same as footnotes (and the only difference is their placement). They do exactly what they are supposed to do, never minding what Adobe says they could be used for (as you just now found out, either they are flat wrong about that, or they are envisioning a much more simplified version of the common references I -- and you -- are used to).

The only reference to references I find in the online help (Endnotes) is how to adjust the style of the number itself.

This is why there are lots of dedicated Bibliography plugins for Word, even though it also has both footnotes and endnotes right out of the box.

This is corroborated by its description the New Features description:

Now, you can also import a word document having endnotes using import option. All the endnotes are imported and added in a new text frame.

-- it does not mention any of the existing "bibliographic managers". (And "Word" should be with a capital. Maybe I should have photoshopped that in.)
