Question

Saving to server

Hello,

There's been much discussion and I see tons of posts, but for my team I support I just want definitive answers and a post to reference. When using Adobe products such as InDesign the team works directly off of a network servers. When they open a file it opens as "Read Only" preventing them from saving changes. My understanding is this is by design and saving to a network server is not support or recommended by Adobe. I did call in for support and they just said they do technical support so cannot tell me how the server should be configured.

Thanks in advance.

working of the server is a pain. here is why:

    1. cross platforms work environments where some user are on mac and windows bring issues with permissions. constant errors that files are in use when trying to delete things from the server.

    2. Most servers are making backups that go back a day or two. our company IT can only go back a week. If you work local with a time machine, you can go back longer.

Yes, what Bob says is correct, if configure correct it works. but good luck trying to get it configured correct.

My advise, work local. make them work local and move files to the server when done. Use time machines to back up files.

While local is always better, it’s a fantasy in a large organization. Many prohibit users from saving to desktops because there’s no back ups.

As for crossplatform workflows, I’ve seen plenty of them especially where InDesign users are one platform and InCopy on the other. Links are converted from : to / and as long as no illegal characters are used and opentype fonts are used there are no issues.

Please stop trying to send people back to 1996.

My understanding is that working from a server isn't supported or recommended by Adobe, and greatly increases the chance of file corruption. However, they don't lock you out from doing it, whether unwise or not. That's an local issue.

There’s no other way to collaborate. What about InCopy workflows that require access to files by multiple authors?

Again, this requires a very robust and well maintained network.

That is NOT by design at all.

Working from a server should be fine as long as it’s properly configured and all users have adequate permissions to access it.
