Question

Screen refresh slow when editing text on layout ID-CC2022

The customer is experiencing frustrating screen refresh issues, sounds similar to a problem in previous version of Indesign. When text changes are made on the layout the screen does not refresh properly and is also very slow. The customer has to keep manually refreshing the page to see the changes made. Indesign CC2022 (17.2). The customer tells us that they have to zoom in an out to fresh the layout preview. This is also happening in InCopy CC2022.

I am also having this issue. I recently upgraded my Mac Pro 2013 (black trash can) running Mojave and to a 2022 MacBook Pro 16" on Monterey and an external 32" LG monitor, and immediately starting having extremely disruptive slowdowns for screen redraw, particularly editing text. I'm running ID 18.0. Monitor is attached via HDMI port but it was doing the same thing connected via USB-C; changing the port didn't help.

Also: upgrading to ID2023 did not help this issue.

What operating system is the computer? Is this happening on just one document or all? If only on one file then try exporting the document as an IDML and then reopening it in your version of InDesign. This can remove some corruption from a file. If it is happening to all files then try deleting your InDesign preferences. This will bring the program back to its defaults and hopefully solve the issue.

To do so:

For Macintosh Users: The User Library folder in which InDesign’s preferences are stored is hidden by default on most Macintoshes. To access it make sure that InDesign is closed and click on the desktop to launch a Finder Window (Command-N). With this window in column view follow the path User>Home folder (it’s the folder with an icon that looks like a house—it may have the user’s name rather than “Home”) and click on the Home folder. With the Option Key pressed choose Library from the Finder Go Menu. “Library” will now appear within the Home folder. Within the Library folder find the folder called Preferences and within it find the folder called “Adobe InDesign” and the file called “com.adobe.InDesign.plist” and delete both that folder and that file. When InDesign is next launched it will create new preference files and the program will be restored to its defaults.

For Windows Users: You can try the quick way of resetting on a PC which is to hold down Ctrl + Alt + Shift when launching InDesign and respond affirmatively when asked if you want to reset. There have been some recent reports that the window asking if you want to reset is not popping up but that the prefs are being reset anyway. If this works great but if it doesn’t you may have to manually delete them.

To do so: On Windows 7 and above the preference files are hidden. To find them go to the Control Panel and open Folder Options and then click the View tab. Then select “Show hidden files and folders” or “Show hidden files, folders or drive options” in Advanced Settings. Then delete (or rename) the folder at the end of this path: C:\Users\<USER>\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\InDesign\<Version #>\<Language>. Make sure that InDesign is closed when you do this. When you relaunch the program it will create new preference files and the program will be at its default settings.

The advantage of manually deleting preference files is that after you’ve reset up the program (make sure that no document window is open) to your liking, you can create copies of your personalized “mint” preference files (make sure that you quit the program before copying them—that finalizes your customization) and use them in the future to replace any corrupt versions you may need to delete.

Hi Bill - Same problem on both Mac & Windows. We have deleted preferences using the keyboardshortcut sequence, but this not change the problem. We can test the export to IDML and reimport to IND and see if this makes a difference.

Hi @Charles Parrington ,

Sorry to hear about the trouble. Please share a few more details like:

  1. Is this happening with the latest version of InDesign(v17.3) as well?
  2. Is this happening with a specific file or multiple files?

We're here to help, just need more information.

Regards

Rishabh

Hi Rishabh - We recently upgraded from CC2021 to CC2022 and then the problems happened. This problem never happened in CC201. It happens on Indesign & Incopy on most text articles, but not always on every text edit. Happens across many different files. I will check but as far as I know they are using the latest available version of Indesign (17.3) & Incopy.
