Question

Search InDesign Preferences

It would be very handy if we could search the InDesign preferences. Sometimes it's not easy to remember which section a particular preference setting is under, so it would be great to be able to do a search for, say 'Default View', which is under 'Display Performance'.

Surely this wouldn't be too difficult a feature to bring into InDesign (and other Adobe apps)?

I just came across this
https://creativepro.com/script-for-setting-indesign-preferences/

In fairness, I was trying to create a script that gave a basic interface to search for a preference and bring you to it - but it's a bit beyond me.

I agree that it's long overdue.

Granted, it's easier said than done (they'd probably need to redo the entire preferences backend and UI from scratch to make it work like in System Settings or various browsers, for example).

Also, I noticed you submitted a new feature request on uservoice (like @Eugene Tyson suggested).

However, such a request has already been there since 2019 (with only 8 votes so far):

https://indesign.uservoice.com/forums/601021-adobe-indesign-feature-requests/suggestions/36508717-preferences-search

So it might be better to keep it as one and add votes there.

Best place to post feature requests is here
https://indesign.uservoice.com/forums/601021-adobe-indesign-feature-requests

Not a bad idea

on a side note

In the newest version of InDesign you can save your preferences and also import them

It's under User Settings

Thanks Eugene, I'm already across the user settings... although this doesn't resolve the issue with losing Workspaces when an Adobe app updates (and yes, I'm keeping my preferences from the previous version)... very annoyin Adobe!
