Seeking help with coloring in Indesign

Hi,

 

I want to color the aperture part of a letter like the ones in the photos I attached below. For this assignment, I only can use InDesign, and I don't know how to do that. I'll appreciate any help.

    You have two options:

    1.  Draw an object beneath the letter - with a straight vertical line on the left and then  roughly enveloping the space you want to color on the right, 
    2.  Duplicate the letter, remove unnecessary points, close the shape. 

     

    There is a 3rd way - combining paths - but all of them require you to have at least a basic familiarity with InDesign?
