Question

Selecting multiple images in InDesign to "edit original" opens multiple instances of photoshop

I was wondering what is happening with my InDesign and if anyone has the same problem/knows how to fix.

Basically, I have 4 images on my spread and when I select them all to "edit original" it opens 4 photoshop instances. And I get an error in photoshop saying "Could not complete your request because it is not the right kind of document."

But when I reveal from explorer that exact same file and drag it into photoshop, it opens just fine.

I'm using:
Adobe InDesign 14.0.2
Adobe Photoshop 20.0.4

Help?

Hi John,

what's your operating system?

Just tried what you want with four placed TIFF images and PhotoShop CC 2019 will open all of them as expected.

I'm on Windows 10 with InDesign CC 2019 14.0.2.324 The files are stored on my local hard drive partition F: .

Regards,
Uwe

It sounds like a problem of file association. For example, on a Mac any png, jpeg, pdf, or eps will open in Photoshop if it is dragged over the Photoshop icon in the dock (tiffs and psd should open in Photoshop by default) but if you double-click on it on the desktop or choose "Go to Link" within InDesign those file formats will open in a default program like Preview. However, if you click on the image file's icon on the Mac desktop and go to the Get Info dialog window (Command-i) you can use the "Open with:" pull-down menu. Select the program that you want to associate with the file and use the "Change All:" option right below the pull-down. This will make it the default for all image files of that type to open with your choice.

To do the same procedure on a PC go to How to Change File Associations in Windows .

Hi Bill,

Thank you for your response.

Currently, my InDesign file only has .tif files

And I have my default app set to Adobe Photoshop for tif files. It's been like this since ever and I've only recently started having this problem of multiple instances of photoshop opening.

I am working on the InDesign file with 3 other computers but all 3 computers are running the same version of InDesign and Photoshop.

If what you are saying is that your links are coming from a server try bringing the images onto your hard drive, linking to those and see if the problem persists. If it works OK when working locally then the problem probably is network related.
