Question

Selecting the last character in a text bloc

Mac OS, Mac Studio, Apple Trackpad.

I can't select the last character in a text bloc. Double and triple click work perfectly, but when manually selecting text, the pointer always positions before the last character. Anyone has the same problem ?

Hi @Bruno5C9A:

Is this something new, or has this behavior been happening forever? My observation is if I press my mouse button down while I'm in the middle of the last letter in a string, it doesn't pick it up the final character. If I press down when I'm on the right of the last letter on the string it does. It appears as if you are over middle the last character but of course we can't see you press your finger down so we don't know.

It dates from 2 months, after an ID upgrade. Of course, I can select a word and its last character but it demands much more attention than before. I really need to very carefullt select the last character. The problem comes from the pointer. The insertion point doesn't places itself after the last character, but just before. To get it right, It takes much time. I have to zoom in, place it carefully after the last one and click stronger. With older versions of ID (and of my system), it was easier to place the insertion point at the right place. Maybe I have to change something to the settings of my trackpad but I don't know what.

Hi @Bruno5C9A:

I'm not experiencing this issue (MacBook Pro | macOS 13.2 | InDesign 18.1) and rely exclusively on my trackpad. Here are my trackpad settings, below. But since you're saying this started after the last upgrade, I think you might want to take a minute to reset your preferences: https://www.rockymountaintraining.com/adobe-indesign-rebuilding-preferences-cache/. Let us know if that makes the difference.

Can you check to see if it is a display issue? (If you did check, you didn't say.)

  • Try changing the formatting with Bold or Red or a different typesize (then undo). Does the last character get formatted?
  • When you cut or delete (then undo), does the last character get deleted?
  • When you are "manually selecting" are you dragging the mouse or using Shift + the arrow keys?

Also:

  • Are you starting at the beginning or starting at the end?
  • Are you selecting an entire paragraph or part of a paragraph?

One thing to note is that if you drag from the end of a paragraph to the beginning, it's imposssible to select the pilcrow.

I apologize for the long delay in seeing and answering your post.
