I'm stumped! shift-command-L left align text is not working anymore in aither Indesign or Illustrator. I've tried every  'fix' in other threads including searching for system pref services shortcuts (none there) and even trid to mke a new shortcut in both AI and IND (won't allow me).

Can any legend help me out please!!!!!

How does "won't allow me" look, exactly? I've never seen InDesign refuse a keyboard shortcut with a message "You are not allowed".

(Or the much friendlier sounding "I'm sorry Dave, I'm afraid I can't let you do that.")

So I try to assign the shortcut "shift-command-L" in keyboard shortcuts and nothing happens (won't allow)

"Won't allow" means "it does not appear in the shortcut field"?

Check your System Preferences > Keyboard > Keyboard Shortcuts, under "Services". Is it assigned to "Search with Google"? That's some sort of a system wide default key combo, it seems.

Check your Keyboard Shortcuts, it may have been assigned to another command.
