Question

Shortcuts stop working - only work when in Safe Mode

I have just updated all of my apps, now currently running Catalina and I've had issues in InDesign mostly, but also in Illustrator with most of my favorite shortcuts not working. It's hard to pinpoint them all but it seems like using the spacebar (usuallly my shortcut for the Hand tool) and the command, option and control keys don't always work. But it's not all shortcuts. It's things like constraining proportions, option dragging to copy.

I know some would say that I need to redefine my shortcuts or delete my preferences but I've tried those things. The only thing that I've found to work is to boot my computer into Safe Mode. While in Safe Mode, everything works as it should. But as soon as I go back, I'm back to not being able to use any shortcuts. Any thoughts? They would be much appreciated!

What version of InDesign are you running on Catalina? Only CC 2020 is fully compatible. Since everything works correctly in Safe Mode I agree with Steve that there is a conflict with possibly a third-party app or plug-in (either within InDesign or as part of the OS) but I wouldn't rule out Catalina itself. This new OS is a whole new ballgame as far as Mac OS's go. If you are unable to narrow down the conflict you can also try changing your InDesign shortcuts through Edit>Keyboard Shortcuts.

Third party utilities and extensions can stop keystrokes from working. Try restarting your computer and open InDesign (or Illustrator) first before any other application, INCLUDING STARTUP APPLICATIONS.

If the keystrokes now work with only InDesign open, then watch carefully as you open other applications which application or browser extension is causing the problem.
