Show Home Screen and Legacy New Document Options Missing in InDesign 21.2 General Preferences

Hi everyone,

I have several computers that have InDesign 2026 installed.

On one win11 machine, the first two general preferences are missing.

I uninstalled using the Creative Cloud Cleaner exe.

Reinstalled the 21.2 (available just today to the east coast of the US)

Those general preferences are still missing!

I have reset as well as deleted cache files.

Any suggestions as to what I can try to get a fully-restored version of InDesign working again?

    Hi all,

On a Windows 11 machine, at InDesign 21.3, I am still missing the first two preferences, and I still have the phenomenon of the workspace switching back to Essentials instead of my custom workspace. This happens every time I open a document.

Why are we having to deal with so many bugs on a premium product like this? We pay a lot of money every month and continuously are fighting new bugs every release. Adobe, it’s just not good enough. Unfortunately you know you have a monopoly so probably don’t care too much.

    Hello @Robert Mellor

I’m sorry to hear you’re having similar trouble with InDesign. Could you share more details, like the version of the OS/InDesign installed, along with a brief screen recording of the issue, so we can better assist you?

Looking forward to hearing from you.

    Hi @Mike Witherell,

Just wanted to check in and see if the issue is still occurring on that Windows 11 machine. Are the ‘Show Home Screen When No Documents Are Open’ and ‘Use Legacy New Document Dialog’ options still missing in 21.2?

Also, were you able to try manually clearing the InDesign preferences again using the steps shared earlier, rather than just uninstalling and reinstalling?

I’m also discussing this behavior with the product team. Your update would be really helpful in moving this forward.

Looking forward to hearing from you.

    Abhishek

Here is what my General > Preferences looks like:

    Missing preferences

Notice that it is missing: Show Home Screen When No Documents Are Open and also Use Legacy New Documents Dialog

Interesting. I seem to remember this coming up a little while ago, but I don’t know if those topics have been migrated yet.

    Hi @Mike Witherell,

Sorry to hear you’re running into this. I came across a similar case that was resolved by manually resetting the preferences. Could you please try that and see if it helps?

You can follow the video in this helpx: https://helpx.adobe.com/indesign/using/setting-preferences.html

    Looking forward to hearing back.

@Mike Witherell This may sound bad… but have you thought of copying the working preferences from the PC that works, and copy that into the two that aren’t working?

I remember many years ago (at least 25 years ago), I was able to copy the Adobe apps to another computer and it worked somewhat and didn’t when you updated it (again, this was when I was young and stupid, not knowing about piracy and copyright!!!).

But, because you owned InDesign and other PC’s preferences are working, you could import the settings?

Let me know how it goes? Be interesting if it works!
