single-page indesign file, data merge multiple pages, consecutive numbering, need to export to pdf

I have an InDesign file that I'm using Data Merge to create 5000 pdf's with different addresses on each pdf page, and I need each pdf to be numbered 1-5000. If I export the data merge, I get the page number of 1 only (repeating 5000 times). How can I export to get 1-5000 WITHOUT having to export the indesign file, then create a pdf file?

Okay then. That's the way to get it done in InDesign.

Otherwise, you'll need Acrobat Pro, in which you can add a header/footer post-merge, and install automatic page numbering there.

To get page numbering in your merge document, just add a Current Page Number marker to the Master Page (of your single page). When the merge-document pages are automatically created, they will be numbered accordingly.

I only want to use the Export PDF feature in Data Merge, not create a 5000 page InDesign file that I then have to export, so that doesn't work. Thanks
