Slow performance when multiple documents open

InDesign CC works pretty speedily with a single document open, but as soon as have I have more than one document open and am alternating between them, (or out of InDesign and back) I always get the beachball hang for a few seconds when I click back into a document. It's not a long wait, but over the course of a day it really affects my productivity. (The nature of my work means that I'm clicking in and out of documents a lot.)

I am running InDesign CC on an iMac, OSX 10.9.5, 3.5 GHz  Intel Core i7, 16GB 1600MHz DDR3.

Is the delay down to an unavoidable performance glltch in InDesign, or can I do anything to improve it? I am considering buying a new iMac Pro on the assumption that its superior processing power would eliminate any delays. But obviously I wouldn't want to commit to this considerable expense without seeing a significant improvement.

Any advice gratefully appreciated.

If the InDesign CC that you're referring to is the current version, CC 2018, then it should not be able to run on OS X 10.9.5 (Mavericks) since it requires OS X 10.11 (El Capitan) or above to even be installed on. If you are running Mavericks then it should not have even been available for install on your Creative Cloud desktop app. If somehow you've got it going on this old system then consider yourself lucky. If you do buy a new iMac then it will come with High Sierra for which CC 2018 is the only version designed to be fully compatible.

What is the exact version of CC that you are running. CC2018 won’t even install on 10.9 and I’m not sure about CC2017, either.

OK then. That makes more sense. If you do buy a new Mac with High Sierra and CC 2018 you should expect a different experience than what you have now. Since it will be a clean install on a new machine it shouldn’t be an issue but I will still warn you to make sure that “Import previous settings and preferences” is unchecked in the Advanced Settings that appear during the install. Having that setting checked when other versions are present on a machine has lead to speed issues so keep it unchecked just to err on the side of caution.
