Spinning Wheel of Death

Hi all,

I'm getting a spinning rainbow wheel every time I try to do something in In Design, it spins for like 8 minutes and then I get an error msg. I'm currently trying to move a page when this happens.

I've been moving pages all day with no trouble so I'm not sure why this started. I added bleeds to my document at some point in the middle, and I added images (linked) and embedded them. I've tried un-embedding them too incase that was slowing it down.

Any thoughts on how to fix this?

Hi there,

Sorry to hear about the trouble you are facing. I would like to know if the steps suggested above by @Manan Joshi @Derek Cross & @Eugene Tyson worked for you? If not, I would request you to share a few more details like:

  • OS and version of InDesign
  • Is the issue related to a specific document? If yes, could you please share the document with us? You can upload it to the Creative Cloud (https://helpx.adobe.com/in/creative-cloud/help/share.html) and share the download link.
  • Where are the files and links saved (Network Drive/ System HDD/ Shared Folder on System/ External HDD)?
  • When did this start happening? Are there any recent changes made to your system? For example, any antivirus, system updates, plugins, or web extensions installed recently.
  • Please check if turning off the internet help resolve the issue?
  • Are you using TimeMachine? If yes, please check if turning it off/ disabling it help resolve the issue?
  • Please check if turning off preflight  (Window > Output > Preflight > Deselect the checkbox) help resolve the issue?

  • Please try different Display options (View > Display Performance) in InDesign. I recommended working on Typical Display.
  • Please try turning off GPU performance from InDesign preferences (cmd + k > GPU Performance > uncheck GPU Performance and see if that helps?

We will be looking forward to your response.

Thanks & Regards,

Thank you all so much. Saving as an IDML file and then back to In Design worked! I so appreciate the help.

Export your file to an IDML - File>Export and choose IDML

Open that file in InDesign - and resave it as a new InDesign file with new file name.

See if it helps.

Which version of InDesign and OS?

How much RAM and spare hard disk capacity do you have?

Have you tried resetting the InDesign preferences?

Does this happen only on a particular document? If so you could try exporting the document to IDML and then resaving back to INDD that might help.
