Story editor first character problem

I have the same issue as reported in this thread: https://forums.adobe.com/message/9952402#9952402

As Jongware points out in that thread, the first character of every line in the story editor is overlaid on the "not in this font" character. The immediate space after a footnote also gets the "not in this font" character.

I have deleted the cache and ID preferences; the problem remains. I have exported the offending files to IDML and opened them, but it's still there.

These files are part of a book. One chapter views fine, two others have the issue. Any other steps I can take to fix this?

    Srishti,

Thanks for your reply. Screenshot is below. Sample file is at Dropbox - story-editor-bug.indd

I have a couple of updates/added information. First, moving the pages to a new document worked. For anyone who doesn't know the easiest way to do that, open a new document, then in the problem document choose "Move pages..." from the Pages panel.

Second, something happened in both the problem documents that might be related to the bug. These documents were both originally imported from Word and had endnotes. When I moved them to the new document, I had TWO sets of endnotes at the end of the document. One set was live--it had endnote numbers and the blue brackets around the notes--but the duplicate set that preceded it was not live. Here is a screenshot of the duplicate set:

    duplicate endnotes

I wonder if this second set of notes was somehow causing the problem in the story editor. I'm not sure how it got generated, or where it was "hiding" in the file.

    Thanks for providing a workaround.

    Hi George,

Sorry to hear about this issue. I would need a few more details to look into this issue.

    • Please check what happens if you move the pages to a new document?
    • Will it be possible for you to share a sample file? If yes, please upload it to Creative Cloud/ Google Drive/ Dropbox and share the direct download link.
    • Share some screenshot of the issue it is showing at your end.

I would also request you to upvote this issue here: story editor – Adobe InDesign Feedback

    Regards,

    Srishti
