Synchronizing Styles Across Individual InDesign Files - Help

Hello wonderful Adobe InDesign support community.  My question has probably been answered several times but I cannot find it on here.  Here is my question as I need help:

I have several individual InDesign documents where I have set the same styles individually for each document (both Character and Paragraph) just by creating a document, then saving it as a new one and working from that, etc...  I now need to update those styles pretty radically, which I have done in one of the InDesign documents - is there a way to easily (please, Lord) sync the new styles from the one I have already done to the new documents so that they override and apply automatically?  It would be crazy to have to individually update each document with both how many styles I have, and how many documents I have.   Any help and direction would be appreciated.

If you don't want to create a Book, the other way is to go to each of the other ID documents, and under the Paragraph Styles panel flyout (top right), select Load Text Styles, Select your newly formatted document, Open, select Check All ( to make sure all the Styles are selected), then Import away.

It would be good to clean out any unsused styles in each document before you do this.

  1. In each file set up the first section to keep its initial numbr.
  2. Create a book file.
  3. Put all files into the bood.
  4. Change in one file all styles.
  5. Click on the left square of that file, so the source symbol appears
  6. Select none or all files.
  7. Synchronize with the synchronize symbol on bottom of the panel or with the panel menu.
