Table cell text visible in Story Editor but invisible in layout view

I'm working on a product catalog in InDesign (CC) based on an Adobe template. This week I noticed that text in certain table cells had disappeared across all my saved versions. After extensive troubleshooting I've narrowed down the issue and am hoping someone has seen this before.

The Situation:

  • Tables were built from an Adobe template
  • Affected cells are body rows manually styled to look like headers
  • Text is completely visible and intact in Story Editor
  • # symbols appear in the cells in layout view, suggesting overset text, but cells are actually empty in layout
  • Selecting all in the cell selects nothing
  • The file was opened on a second machine around March 13th via CC sync

What I've Already Tried:

  • Replaced missing Source Sans Pro (OTF) with Source Sans Pro (TT) via Find Font with Redefine Styles checked
  • Cleared paragraph style overrides
  • Corrected paragraph style definition to reference available font
  • Toggled Display Performance to High Quality
  • Exported to IDML and reopened
  • Updated InDesign
  • Checked cell insets, row height, vertical justification, overprint — all normal

Nothing has resolved the issue. Has anyone encountered text that exists in Story Editor but simply won't render in layout view? Any suggestions welcome.

I solved this by replacing the font with Arial. The text reappeared. When I changed it back to Source Sans Pro (TT), the text remained. Any insight into why this would happen?

Hi, thanks for reaching out and we’re glad that you were able to find a workaround that helped.

Replacing the text with Arial and then switching back to Source Sans Pro likely worked because the font change forced InDesign to recompute the layout or refresh how the table was rendered.

We can check with the product team on the possible reasons but we would need more information and a screen capture as Dave suggested so that we can pass that along.

Thanks,

Nikunj

Can you show a screen capture of the table and the same cells in Story Editor?
