Table Control Bar Issues After Updating to InDesign 2025

Dear community or Adobe staff, after updating to Indesign 2025 yesterday, I've noticed the following with individual table modifications:

If I create a table and would like to customize e.g. some of its horizontal lines, I therefore select the relevant areas in the table itself and then select the horizontal lines to be modified in the control bar (the grid-scheme in the upper horizontal control bar).

Previously, I was able to edit modifications for a certain selected area again and again – Indesign remembered the area and I was able to change e.g. line thicknesses, colours etc. as required as often as I wanted.

Now this grid scheme behaves quite strangely: Sometimes it activates all lines in a table , sometimes it activates the outer lines or other times it activates a vertical line … but never the part that I edited before and I that I want to change.

As this is quite difficult to describe in words only, I have made a screencast. I hope this helps:

This behaviour is quite illogical, isn't it? If anyone has an idea how to fix this, I'd be very thankful. If it is a bug, I hope my description helps.

PS: I am using the German version of Indesign. I hope all terms have been translated correctly into English.

Have you considered planning your look of your table by pre-building Cell Styles that capture how you want it to look? Then you could apply the Cell Styles by selecting rows/columns of your table; or else by allowing a Table Style to apply up to 5 Cell Styles that have been planned and built by you. Working by means of the Control Panel is the slowest and most problematic way to approach a table. You do not need to reset any InDesign preferences; nor do you need to re-install InDesign.

Hi @aennie,

Thanks for bringing this to our attention! To troubleshoot, please back up your preferences and perform a reset. You can find instructions here: Reset Preferences.

After that, try creating a new document, insert a table, and see if the issue persists.

Let us know how it goes!

Best,
Abhishek

Dear Abhishek, thanks a lot for your super quick reply.

I followed your advice and made a complete reset (deleted the presets). Then I rebooted the Mac and Indesign but … unfortunately the issue stays the same as shown in the original post's  screencast. Whether I use the originally demonstrated document or set up a fresh table in a totally new document.

Also the different ways to create a table did not affect this strange behaviour. Way 1 would be: open a text field and insert a table / turn text into table. Way 2 would be: create a table via the tool bar ("insert table").

Thanks for caring!

Hi @aennie,

Thank you for your prompt response and for following the reset instructions! I appreciate your efforts in troubleshooting the issue.

I’ve tested the table functionality in InDesign 2025 on my end (on Windows and macOS both), and it appears to be working correctly. Please try the following and update me on the results:

1. Third-party plugins can interfere with InDesign’s performance. If you have any installed, try disabling them temporarily to see if the issue persists.

2. When creating a table, ensure you are using the Insert Table option from the menu rather than converting a text box into a table.

3. As a last resort, you might try creating a new user account on your Mac to see if the problem is specific to your current user profile.

Additionally, could you please provide the details of the operating system you are using? This information can help us further diagnose the issue.

If the problem continues after trying these steps, please let me know. I can escalate this for further investigation. Additionally, we will be checking this with the product team and provide you an update.

Thank you for your patience, and I look forward to hearing back from you!

Best,
Abhishek
