Table of Contents based on Paragraph Style

Hello all...  Thank you in advance for your help!

I have a 100 story document where each story's heading has been assigned a paragraph style "Main Heading"...  Now, I have created a table of contents based on that Main Heading paragraph style, of course works like a charm, except I have a few titles which have more information than I would like in the Table of Contents.  I am now realizing that possibly I should have used a Character Style instead of a paragraph style.

Quick Fix?

Thanks

If it's more than a few or you'll be updating the TOC frequently, you don't want to have to manually edit the results each time.

    Another option:

Make a faux heading for those with more content than you need.

    1. Make 2 heading styles: Main Heading - Not in TOC, and Main Heading (your original style). Make them identical in appearance, so one is based on the other (essentially a clone).
    2. Make a new text frame and position it on the pasteboard so that one edge overlaps the live area by 1 pixel or more.
    3. Type the shortened version of the heading in the new text frame and format it with your paragraph style for Main Headings.
    4. Apply the Main Heading - Not in TOC style to the full size, visual heading on the page.

Your TOC will now pick up only those heading with Main Heading, including the Faux ones in the pasteboard text frames, but will skip those with Main Heading - Not in TOC.

Only a few? Just fix it manually.
