Technical issues with version 21 repeat in version 20

I apologize if this has been discussed recently, but I was unable to find any relevant threads.

My new Adobe 2026 (version 21.0.2) exhibits a number of issues which make work very cumbersome:

  • Entire paragraphs blank out (especially when I’m marking text for editing), and only reappear after scrolling the blank space out and back into the editor window, or clicking somewhere else on the page.
  • The editor is very sluggish, regardless of GPU performance settings.
  • Some paragraphs are not aligned on screen correctly (letters stick outside frame, etc.) - however, they become properly justified in exported PDF documents. Switching between Adobe Paragraph Composer and Adobe World-Ready Paragraph Composer usually fixes this issue for a given paragraph, though.
  • The Undo history gets lost.

I have reverted to the previous version (20.5.1) but now somehow exactly the same issues started appearing in this one as well. I have already tried the typical fixes (clearing the program cache, resetting the preferences), but nothing helped so far.

It’s not a singular problem limited to a single system - my two machines, a desktop and a laptop, behave in exactly the same way (both running Windows 11). Any suggestions for possible solutions?

Thank you!

Adam

Have you upgraded InDesign to 21.2?

My InDesign is up to date and I’m having similar issues also text is randomly squishing together and I have to adjust the kerning from 0 to anything else then back to 0 to get it to go away. This is happening to many users in my organization and is random.

    Hi @coicreative,

Thanks for sharing this and sorry you’re running into it. To help move this forward, could you please confirm whether ‘up to date’ means you’re on InDesign 21.2, and also share the OS version you’re using. As mentioned earlier in the thread, several text rendering and stability issues were addressed in 21.2, so it would be helpful to confirm whether the behavior still persists there.

If you’re still seeing the issue on InDesign 21.2, please try manually resetting the InDesign preferences by following the video in this article: https://helpx.adobe.com/indesign/using/setting-preferences.html and then test again. Also, please let me know whether this happens while you’re actively editing the file or only after reopening a saved file. If possible, a short screen recording showing the text squishing behavior would help me look into this further.

    Looking forward to your update.

This should be fixed in the just-released InDesign 21.2. Are you sure you’re having this particular issue in InDesign 2025 as well?

That’s the strange part. Yes, an entire set of issues with 2026 version, which replicates in the 2025 version on two machines.
