Question

Text frame inset spacing and rounded corners: will we ever...

I was hoping ID 2020 would finally give me a much desired feature. But no, it still isn't there. Maybe someone has a solutiuon for my problem?

I use a LOT of text frames with for instance one or two rounded corners. When a text frame is a regular regtangle you can set inset spacing for all sides but as soon as you make a corner rounded you only have ONE inset spacing option... which is driving me crazy because I use different inset spacing setting for all sides all the time... and now I have to make duplicates of all my text frames, remove the text from it, place it underneath the text frame, add a corner effect and then change the inset spacing of the original text frame... if you still know what I mean. Resizing these frames is a core...

Is it really so hard to give us text frames with rounded corners and still an inset spacing option for all sides...? Why doesn't ID 2020 have this option? And how do you all solve this problem?

Here's one User Voice link where you can add your vote to this glaring omission.

Hi Sharon,

don't know who labeled my answer "Correct".

FWIW: I checked InDesign CS6 version 8 from 2012.

One can see the same issue there.

From my German InDesign CS6 on Windows 10:

Who labeled this as the "correct answer"?

There was a time when you could do this even WITH rounded corners. I would do is set the inset to be different for the top and the bottom. (Back in 2014-ish) Why did this feature go away??

"Who labeled this as the "correct answer"?"

Hi @SharonTender ,

I unlabeled my answer as "Correct".

Still, there cannot be a correct answer in this thread. InDesign has not added the feature…

All we can do is to vote for this feature request:

Hi J_van_E,

there already should be some feature requests about this at indesign uservoice:

https://indesign.uservoice.com/

FWIW: The same issue also comes up with text wrap on a non-rectangular frame.

But with text wrap one could edit the text wrap path with the direct selection tool.

I’m guessing the reason is a frame with rounded corners could be a circle, and in that case what would be the definition of the left inset?

Hm, not, not a circle... I made a (random) example of what I'd like to do. In this example the yellow box is a seperate frame behind the selected textframe. As soon as I create a text frame with a rounded corner (or any other corner effect) I only have on inset option, as in your screenshot.

I think you’ll have to use two frames. You might not want a circle, but it would possible to create one via Corner Options, and then there would be no sides for the different insets.

You could file a feature request
